What does it mean when you have someone host your website?

I want to purchase a web site. What does it mean when they say that I can use my own host. I have a place to place the web site. Thanks.

A host is where you store the files for your website and where it can be accessed from the internet. In order to host websites you need to have a server. If you run a server on your own PC you have to contact your ISP in order to make sure you have a static IP. Plus your host machine must be on in order for it to be accessed over the internet. You also have to protect your server from crackers. Some people set up and run a server on their PC but most just pay a monthly fee to have their site hosted by a large company.

When someone hosts the website. That means that your website files are located on their servers. There are many places that offer free places to host websites with banners. You can register a domain name from one company and host the website at another place.

You need to store the files that make your website work images buttons codes etc. in an internet server so that they can be displayed anytime for everyone that visits your website This is whats called hosting some pages offer to host your website files for free such as: http://bravenet.com When they tell you that you can use your own host they are assuming you already have a server or someone that hosts your files online and basically what they are selling you is only the domain name and not a hosting service so you need to find a website to store your files. Heres what I usually do I sign up on bravenet.com and get a sub domain for free ie. http://websitename.bravehost.com then I upload my files to their servers the steps are all guided and its really easy and thats it you could then buy your own domain right there to be like ie. http//websitename.com and youre done. Hope it helps
